My Thoughts on Real-Time Search

There's been a lot of talk lately about Real-Time Search. During the past few months, Google has added a real-time area to it's search results, Facebook and FriendFeed now retrieve real-time results, and new search engines devoted to real-time, such as Collecta, have sprung up.

Domain Name Change

A little bit of site news: I've decided to change the domain name of this site from errornix.com to rantsaboutsoftware.com. Rants About Software has pretty much always been the title. I just finally decided to make the domain name match. As usual, I registered the domain through Bihira (They're the greatest!)

This is mainly just a cosmetic change, the site itself isn't changing. Also, errornix.com still works; it just redirects you to rantsaboutsoftware.com.

Highlight the Author's Comments in Squarespace

Here's another Squarespace tutorial for you. This one's a bit shorter than the last one. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to highlight comments that are written by the author, so that they stand out amongst regular user comments. This image should give you an idea of what I mean.

Dick's Sporting Goods FAIL!

A guy at work showed this to me. Now I don't know who developed the website for Dick's Sporting Goods, but apparently they've worked with plenty of other retailers as well. This is made apparent by the fact that whoever developed the site, is using the same database to store product information for all of their clients! How do I know this? I know this because you can search for plenty of non-sporting goods right on Dick's website! Try this search for televisions to see what I mean.

Next time I need to buy some home electronics, I'm going to do it through Dick's website. It's bound to confuse someone in the sales department.

Add a Custom Twitter Widget to Your Squarespace Site

Updated on June 26, 2009 by Registered CommenterErrornix

Twitter BirdAs I'm sure you've noticed, I recently added a Twitter widget to the site. Twitter does a pretty good job of getting you started with a generated chunk of HTML/JavaScript (or Flash). But I figured I'd go ahead and describe what all I did to add the widget to Squarespace as well as give some insight into how you can customize your Twitter widget.

Pandora FAIL!

I recently started using Pandora, and so far, I love it (especially since Sirius got rid of the Punk Channel)! So I was listening to Pandora at the work the other day when I noticed that someone apparently made this data entry mistake...

Obviously "All Hallow's EP" by AFI is not the same thing as the "Winning London" soundtrack.

The thing that's weird about this is that it used to display the correct image. So apparently someone at Pandora was doing some data entry and somehow managed to screw up a record somewhere. I guess it's understandable, but it's still annoying. Oh well.

By the way, you can check out my Pandora profile here.

Twitter Got Hacked

Twitter GirlEarlier this week, several high-profile Twitter accounts were hacked.

Here's what happened. Some kid was trying to hack the account of a popular Twitter user. He did this by conducting a basic automated dictionary attack. The attack ran all night and the next morning he had access to the account. It wasn't until then that he realised that the account was actually for a Twitter administrator. So from there, he was able to access anyone's Twitter account. His newfound administrative rights granted him access to the accounts of Barack Obama, Britney Spears, Bill O'Reilly, Facebook, The Huffington Post, and more.

Let's look at what Twitter did wrong.
